Certification Process

Create your free account on the Fitwel Platform, and register your first project by entering basic project information.
Registration of a project provides access to the Platform's interactive scorecard, benchmarking capability, and performance data that summarizes a project's areas of strength and opportunity.
Registration fee: $500 USD per project.
Certification fees are dependent on project size, see pricing.

Advance through the Fitwel process, by choosing the appropriate Fitwel pathway (new construction or existing building) and associated Scorecard, and assessing how your project measures up against each of the Fitwel Strategies.

Create and archive historical snapshots of your responses to the Fitwel Strategies to see how each project has improved over time.

Upload required documentation to show how you’re complying with the selected Fitwel Strategies.

In as little as 12 weeks, Fitwel’s Certification Team reviews a project, and sends comments for the project team’s review and response.

You made it! Fitwel’s Certification Team designates the project with a numerical score and associated Star Rating. Your certification is valid for 3 years.

Certification Approaches for New and Existing Projects
New Construction Certification
This certification approach applies to projects that are currently in the design stage or under construction and consists of two certification types: Design Certification (prior to occupancy) and Built Certification (post occupancy).
Existing Building Certification
This certification approach applies to all occupied projects, including existing or recently completed projects, and consists of one certification type: Built Certification.
Design Certification Type
Design Certification is available to new construction and major renovation projects once the design of the project is solidified and prior to the project being occupied. Design Certification is valid for three years from the date of certification, at which time the completed project applies for a Built Certification.
Built Certification Type
Built Certification is available for existing or recently completed projects that are occupied and in use. Built Certification is valid for three years from the time of certification.
About the Project Review Process
The Fitwel Certification Team uses a verified approach to evaluate each project's certification documentation.
To uphold the integrity of the standard, Fitwel works with a group of consultants who are highly knowledgeable about the Fitwel Certification System, with relevant experience in the healthy building industry and proven expertise in the Fitwel Standard requirements. This allows for a mutually beneficial system in which Fitwel ensures high-quality project reviews, while consultants continuously develop professional skills and become experts in the world's leading certification system committed to building health for all.
Prior to conducting project reviews, each consultant undergoes a comprehensive due diligence process. Furthermore, all consultants are bound to a Non-Disclosure Agreement and a Data Privacy Policy that guarantee the strictest confidence and reliability when performing their duties as reviewers.
As Little As a 12-Week Review Process
We guarantee that all Champion Companies, Providers, and Ambassadors advance through the certification process in 12 weeks, with all other submitted projects undergoing the same process in 16 weeks.
During the project review process you will receive:
an initial review with comments from Fitwel
one response to the comments from the project team
a final review from Fitwel
a numerical score and Star Rating (as applicable) for the project

Recertification
Fitwel Certification is valid for three years. Building recertification can be initiated at any time following the initial certification for $500 USD. Projects that submit for recertification within a year following the expiration of their three-year certification period are eligible for 20% off current fees. Any project that submits for recertification after one year from the expiration date is subject to current certification fees.
Your project can maintain its Fitwel status without lapse by initiating recertification at any point within three years from the initial certification award, and by submitting for recertification within one year of the expiration date.
Projects that have received a Built Certification and are submitted for recertification will be reviewed under the version of the Fitwel Scorecard that was in place on the date when the project was registered for recertification.
Projects that have received a Design Certification will be reviewed under the version of the Fitwel Scorecard in which the original certification was awarded, but also have the option of recertifying under the most up-to-date version.

Building owners can apply for Fitwel’s healthy building certification to implement, track, and benchmark actions and strategies that impact human health and wellbeing. Obtaining a healthy building certification demonstrates the building’s commitment to improving the lives of residents, occupants, and the surrounding communities.

The Fitwel Standard provides tailored scorecards for existing and new buildings and sites to optimize the unique opportunities for every project to receive the Fitwel healthy building certification—whether it’s a single-floor build-out or a large-scale development.

A range of buildings and sites (“projects”) are eligible. Communities, commercial/industrial sites, senior housing, workplaces (multi-tenant base buildings, multi-tenant whole buildings, single tenant buildings, commercial interior spaces), retail buildings, and multifamily residential buildings are all eligible for the Fitwel Certification.

Once the registration, benchmarking, and submission of the documents are complete, Fitwel’s Certification Team will review and provide feedback on the project within 16 weeks. Fitwel Champions and Ambassadors are eligible for expedited certification review timelines of as little as 12 week.

A Fitwel Building or Site Certification is valid for three years.

Beginning in November 2022, Fitwel launched a Remediation Process available for all projects after completing the Fitwel Final Review.
This new process is completely optional and provides a formal and structured pathway to improve a project’s Fitwel score and/or star rating. The Remediation Process allows project teams to submit additional documentation for strategies that have not been achieved, or attempted, during the initial project submission, within a year from Final Review completion. The process will cost $1,000 per review and cover up to 10 strategies, with Fitwel Champion and Provider companies receiving a 50% discount.
Process Guidelines
• All Fitwel Certifications (excluding Viral Response Approval) are eligible for the Remediation Process.
• Each project may use the Remediation Process 3 separate times within 1 year from the original Final Review completion date.
• Project teams may submit up to 10 different strategies in each Remediation Process.
• For the Remediation Process to be considered complete, documentation must be submitted for all strategies being considered for the review cycle. The Certification Team cannot review any documentation submitted after the Remediation Process has been initiated.
• Regardless of the number of Remediation Processes for a project, Fitwel will recognize the date of the Final Review completion as the official project certification date.
• Projects may be submitted for a Remediation Process review regardless of score or star rating achieved in the initial certification submission.
• The Remediation Process typically takes 2-4 weeks to complete.
